Payday lenders' nemesis

"As payday lenders have flourished throughout Virginia, they've had to fend off opponents from nonprofit groups that advocate for the poor at the General Assembly. Those groups, like the Virginia Poverty Law Center, try to persuade lawmakers to consider the effects of laws on consumers for a wide range of bills. To counter their influence, payday and car title lending companies have spent at least $1.4 million on political contributions and lobbyists over the past five years - and that doesn't include the hard-fought 2007 session."

Proposed Ballot Measure Would Ban Payday Loans in Arizona
May 14, 2007
"PHOENIX - A proposed 2008 ballot initiative would ask Arizona voters to ban payday loans. Rep. Marian McClure, a Tucson Republican who has fought in the Legislature to impose restrictions on the loans, on Monday filed organizational papers for the campaign and released draft language for the proposed ban that would take effect Oct. 31, 2009."

Payday Loan Association Adds Internet Lending Best Practice

"The Community Financial Services Association of America (CFSA), the national trade association representing payday lenders, issued new requirements for its members that offer online payday loans. The new Internet Lending Best Practice requires CFSA members to follow state laws governing payday loans and to be licensed in each state they do business."

Oregon: House Approves Predatory Lending Cap

"Across the country, states that had eliminated caps are reinstating them. Interest rate caps in other states range from 17 percent in Arkansas to 60 percent in Georgia, but most states have determined that a 36 percent rate cap best guarantees access to credit while keeping usury in check. At the federal level, Congress recently enacted a 36 percent cap on consumer loans to all active duty military members and their families, underscoring the problem nationwide."
